[News] Group gives 4-week ultimatum to power coy over poor supply

A coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Kaduna has issued a four-week ultimatum to Kaduna Electric to regularize power supply to customers in the state or face mass protest.

This was contained in a communique read to newsmen at the end of a tripartite meeting and Face-2-Face engagement with the CSOs, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and Kaduna Electric.

Convener of the meeting, Yusuf Amoke, who read the communique, said the ultimatum became necessary following incessant power outages in the city and environs for several weeks.

He said customers who did not enjoy electricity supply for more than half of the month would later receive outrageous bills, adding that effort to dialogue with the electricity distribution company was in vain as it refused to attend the meeting though they were invited.

The General Manager of TCN, Idris Lawal-Aliu, said during the meeting that Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company is entitled to eight per cent of the total daily energy generation.

Lawal-Aliu disclosed that 6,172 megawatts was provided and eight per cent of that was about 405 MW meant for distribution in the franchise areas of Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi and Sokoto states.

He disassociated TCN from involvement in the cause of the continuous power outage in Kaduna city and its environs saying, “We have enough energy to give to DisCos in our area of coverage.”
