Review: Boc Madaki - Kaya a Kasa (@BocMadaki)

Some rappers come alive when they rap. With BOC it's almost the opposite: he looks as if he's gone into a trance, as if the words he's saying are emanating from somewhere else.

Boc Madaki is One of the leading acts in Nigerian hip-hop. For years underground hip-hop defined itself in opposition to the perceived frivolity of mainstream hip-hop, but a newer generation of underground rappers has embraced an aesthetic that's quirkier and less didactic. Boc's recent Tape, ''Ra'ayi'' is an impressive collection of songs related to the theme of work, with spacious, casual beats propelling introspective and often Deep lyrics.

Most rappers engage the audience in a one-sided conversation, but Boc Madaki has practiced a sort of artful disengagement: the pleasure of hearing him rap gives me the Same pleasure of watching a performer disappear into his own skull.
